18 Feb Supermaxi: Pizza Worth Travelling For
Supermaxi is North Fitzroy’s best pizza place, hands down. They do simple Italian food just right, so if you’re not a local, head into the hood for some new school meets old school service.
Simple Italian Food, Done Well
Supermaxi, located right on St Georges Road, is the place you go to when you just want some damn authentic and delicious Italian comfort food, served to you without pretence. Owners and partners Rita Micali (co-owner and chef at Ladro) and Giovanni Patané focus on the simplicity of the food, specifically their pizzas, which are hand-stretched by Micali, baked in their double oven and generally renowned among North Siders.
Prepare your palette with the Fried Cauliflower and the Fried Calamari. Then move on to the Guilietta–a Tomato base with Salami, Black Olives, Capers, Basil and Mozzarella–, the Bada Bing–Tomato base with Pork and Fennel Sausage, Provolone, Oregano and Chili–, and the Boscaiola–a white base with Mushrooms, Porcini, Mozzarella and Truffle Oil. Balance out the carbs with a nice Radicchio Salad with Fennel, Rocket and Kohlrabi and some Crumbed Veal Costoletta.
Per la Famiglia
There’s a reason so many Italian families and people from all walks of North Fitzroy life see fit to dine here on the reg, and it’s not just the food. The essence of the place is grounded and accessible, and you can really tell the owners love what they do. The service is always welcoming to the point that Giovanni will make any patron feel like a long lost cousin the moment they walk in the door. Service extends beyond Giovanni to the rest of the staff seamlessly. Supermaxi gives meaning to the word “hospitality,” truly making each guest feel looked after and well fed.
“There’s a little bit of today and yesteryear here. We’re serious about being casual,” said Giovanni.
