18 Feb Neighbourhood Wine Room: European Dining in North Fitzroy
If you don’t already consider North Fitzroy’s Neighbourhood Wine Room to be one of your most reliable neighbours, you will after you get a taste of their European-style cuisine and ridiculous selection of wines by the bottle.
What is it about North Fitzroy’s Neighbourhood Wine that feels so familiar? The scent of fresh basil welcomes you warmly as you make your way up the winding staircase into the foyer, where that homely feeling only grows. Victorian-esque wallpaper lines the walls, rich velvet drapes from the windows and oil paintings of children stare down at you. Then it hits you. Neighbourhood Wine bar feels, and kind of smells, like your Nonna’s house. If your Italian grandma were a boss lady who stocked the best wine in Melbourne.
Curating the Best Wine, Bringing it to Fitzroy North
Don’t be that dickhead that walks into a place called Neighbourhood Wine and orders a gin and tonic. It’s not like they don’t offer every spirit from Vodka to Sherry, and even a veritable craft beer selection, but how good would it be to order a bottle of Pinot Noir from Burgundy that pours like blood-red silk, or perhaps an Italian Bosco Orange from Liguria to lighten the palate a bit?
Dwarfed phyiscally and mentally by the Bible-sized menu of provincial and artisanal winemakers? Good thing the bartender is. Go on, class it up with a bottle you may or may not be able to afford. At the very least order a glass of wine, which they offer to you based on country, from Portugal to South Africa.
Perfect for Grazing or Going Solo
Whether you’d like to graze the evening away by sharing tapas-style dishes – like the Duck Parfait with Spiced Plums and warm Brioche – or have a proper meal in the form of their Pork Shoulder Roast with Summer Slaw or Cape Grim Bavette Steak with fat Chips and Salad, you can trust Neighbourhood Wine Room to fill your belly the French way– a healthy mixture of wine and food. For some of the best European- style dining this side of the city, stray a little further from the typical Lygon Street haunts and give Neighbourhood Wine Room a try.
Word on the Street
