This week, Hood Food Guide headed into North Fitzroy to see where Executive Chef Karen Batson–of Cookie, The Toff in Town, Magic Mountain Saloon, Boney and Colonel Tan’s– likes to get her grub on. Check out the run down.

Loafer Bread

Why: Because it’s the best bakery in North Fitzroy, with a homey atmosphere and delicious scent that beckons you to enter and sit down for a treat and a cup of coffee. The bakers are up at the butt crack of dawn kneading their rustic sourdough and baking sweet little morsels to delight your senses.  Key word here? Organic.

Eat: Bombolones–sugary Italian doughnuts with sweet Vanilla Bean Custard and Currants inside.

Get There: Get on the 11 tram to West Preston and hop off at Scotchmer and St Georges.

Neighourhood Wine Room

Why:  They can always surprise you with a rare wine by the glass. Neighbourhood Wine Room, as its name suggests, has a list that can rival any Melbourne CBD wine bar, minus the pretension. It’s a home away from home with better amenities, like a fireplace and a pool table. Not to mention it’s a North Fitzroy legend as it was the original Fitzroy Mafia Den.

Eat: Bavette Steak with Red Wine and Shallot Butter, served with Fat Chips and a Green Salad. Also eat the Seasonal Vegetable Salad, a tasty as way to get your veggies.

Get There: Take the 96 up Nicholson and hop off at Reid Street.

Pinotta

Why: It feels like home. Owner Heidi Modra’s passion for her work is evident the moment you walk into this light Italian restaurant. She calls the North Fitzroy venue her living room, and always takes on the role of the charming host. Let her order for you; she’ll take good care of you.

Eat: The handcut Handkerchief Pasta is unreal, but some of Modra’s faves are the Calamari Fritti, Gnocchi Gorgonzola and the Rib Eye. On the episode, she served Batson and friends Cured Kingfish with Celery Hearts, Pan Fried Sardines and a Razor Clam dish with a Parsley and Garlic sauce.

Supermaxi

Why: Honest, simple and unpretentious, Supermaxi is a casual place serving extraordinary Italian. It’s a big Italian family place, so if you don’t have any kids, bring friends that you consider family here and feel the love. The fit out is quite fresh, too.

Eat: For hand-stretched pizzas, Owner Giovanni recommends the Julietta, Bada Bing and Bosciola. For a meal, try the Veal Corseletta.

Get There: Take the 11 up St Georges and get off at Park Street.
